AI-based Innovative Design for Cultural Heritage

Canhe is a cross-media artist and researcher whose practice interrogates the entanglement of technology and human life. Working at the confluence of critical theory, media studies, and artistic experimentation, his work examines how contemporary technologies intervene in, reshape, and restructure everyday experience. He is particularly concerned with the shifting position of ordinary individuals within social structures under the dominance of grand technological narratives.

Yang’s trajectory has recently moved from the position of a critical observer to that of an active constructor. He advances the speculative framework of temporary alliances between “ordinary humans” and “ordinary machines”—a counter-hegemonic imagination that challenges the monopolization of creativity and agency by technological elites. This concept is being developed textually and will be tested through practice, as Yang seeks to confront the intensifying dynamics of digital colonialism and technological hegemony in the globalized present.

His practice spans a wide range of media—from installation and sculpture to interactive systems—reflecting a refusal to be confined by disciplinary boundaries. Beyond his artistic production, Yang has provided digital art services for leading institutions including Adidas International, the National Museum of China, Alibaba, and Cosmo magazine. In 2022, he became a contracted digital artist with Output. Currently, he directs R&C Design Studio, an experimental design practice exploring how generative AI intersects with material culture to reimagine the mechanisms of cultural heritage reproduction.

Yang is also active in pedagogy and knowledge exchange. He has taught as a visiting lecturer at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, delivering courses on GenAI-enabled cultural heritage innovation and technologically driven art and design. He is now affiliated with the School of Creativity and Innovation at Xiamen University, where he supports the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) teaching team in courses on media art, spatial narratives, and design foundations.

In both practice and theory, Yang’s work insists on making visible the infrastructures and ideologies embedded in contemporary technologies, while opening speculative pathways toward more egalitarian human–machine futures.
